MASTERCARD WORLDWIDE: ON DEMAND EMV ISSUANCE ANYWHERE
The Company:
MasterCard is a global payments and technology company. It operates the world’s fastest payments processing network, connecting consumers, financial institutions, merchants, governments and businesses in more than 210 countries and territories. MasterCard’s products and solutions make everyday commerce activities - such as shopping, traveling, running a business and managing finances - easier, more secure and more efficient for everyone.
Background
In 2007 MasterCard developed MOTAPS. This stands for Mobile Over The Air Provision of Services. This provisioning system sets up the standard for delivering customer payment account data directly over the air to secure elements in NFC phones.
It was designed to make it easier for consumers with MasterCard branded credit, debit or prepaid accounts to personalise PayPass applications over the air to their phones.
While the market deploys NFC readers The Hub and MasterCard have developed a secure process to issue in-markt to programmable devices such as Attended and Unattended Payment Terminals (UPT) in any form factor containing an EMV chip, including mobiles.
The Solution – A product called transform
Transform is a unique in market EMV issuance service that was specifically developed to increase the personalisation and issuance of EMV payment cards or other EMV form factors such as NFC mobile phones.
The form factors are issued through in-market attended and unattended remote programmable devices as illustrated below. Transform is also capable of converting smaller non EMV bureaux to personalise and issue EMV form factors.
The solution is based on The Hub multi-channel platform inheriting previous integrations with pre-accredited hardware componentry such as PEDs and payment software providers called PSPs.
On the 21st March 2011 The Hub successfully achieved Proof of Technology and an integration of The Hub Platform plus plug in Transform application with MOTAPS. The Hub has since performed yet further integrations as well as an installation of a highly secure 24/7 managed hosting facility which are all part of the accreditation requirements. This now represents a live full end2end in market issuance system.
The solution is currently going through EMVco accreditation but has been cleared as being both EMVco and PCI DSS compliant.
The Results……so far
A unique service provision and new global standard related to the issuance of MasterCard payment form factors including mobile.
The first live MOTAPS in market issuance card was delivered 09.11.11 and the solution was launched in Paris at Cartes 15.11.11 at the MasterCard stand. The Hub is the first Trusted Service Provider (TSP) of MOTAPS the MasterCard Worldwide mobile platform. We have only recently started selling the solution and await the first implementation.
Going forward it will not only be cards issued from the Transform solution. MOTAPS allows The Hub Platform and Transform to encode EMV chip in any form anywhere.
Conclusions
The driving ambition of The Hub Multi-channel Platform gateway is to ensure that all products and services carried by the Platform can be sold and processed using the most secure and latest payment processes. MOTAPS from MasterCard is the first payment issuance capability of its kind and now sits alongside our long standing applications for in market payment acceptance through what are known as Payment Service Providers (PSP)
This issuance capability represents a major step forward for The Hub multi-channel Platform. It has taken over 4 years to develop and come to market representing a new global standard in the payment industry. Our TSP status recognises The Hub is the first and currently only ecommerce platform integrated with MasterCard MOTAPS globally.
